A Little Gem of a Boutique - Katie & May, Headingley Leeds
Posted: Sunday 24th September 2017 in Case Studies
When shop owner Katie contacted us about an opportunity to completely fit out her new boutique in Leeds we jumped at the chance. At the first meeting the shop was an empty shell - the electrician, plasterer and painter hadn’t started yet and the shop needed to open in less than 4 weeks. In true Urban Metalworks style we took up the challenge!
Set with a brief on the number of shelves, hangers, tables and the large customer service desk we set about making the metal shelf hangers and the frame for the desk – this had to be made in sectional pieces to get the frame through the front door and completed on site.
Katie was clear on the colours with a copper finish on the metalwork to complement the business logo and a rich wood stain to balance against the soft pink and green grey painted walls and sills. Samples of distressed wood were mocked up with different shades and taken to the shop for Katie to approve.
We normally make all of our furniture out of hardwoods, such as Oak or Black Walnut, but as we had agreed a heavy distressed look and a fairly dark stain we suggested using a good quality Redwood which would keep the costs down.
The large shelves had to be wide and hold a hanging rail beneath them. Designing the brackets and fixings to hold the load when fully laden with clothes was key.
The hanging rail and some fixings were made from copper pipe and the steel brackets were powder coated in a similar colour to match.
In between the shelves funky pipe hooks were made to display Katie’s prized pieces.
The tables that displayed the jewellery and accessories were completely wood.
The tops were distressed to match and the legs were painted to complement the wall and plinth colouring.
The large customer service desk was the final piece.
Once the frame was made we cut the wood to size, jointed it and sanded it until it was super smooth.
All the wood was then distressed and then a coloured wax oil was applied.
The second and final coat was clear to give the requested colour.
The wax oil gives a tough water resistant finish that will not stain garments that come into contact with the furniture.
Once completed everything was delivered and fitted on site the day after the painter had finished and two days before opening. This included cladding the customer service with wood once the frame had been put together.
Finally Katie and her team did their magic.
Pressed all the clothes and hung them, folded them and displayed them in time for the grand opening!
What a great day, seeing our beautiful furniture combined with stunning clothing brands successfully delivered with plenty of happy customers!
One of these happy customers included myself. A beautiful jacket by ‘Soaked in Luxury’ which I am sure will not be the last from this gorgeous little boutique.
One of my friends also purchased the beautiful dress shown on the picture. The amount of comments we have both had about the jacket and the dress has definately encoraged us both to come back again to find other unique and beautiful clothes at very reasonable prices.
Well done Katie & May for helping the ladies of Leeds and the surrounding area look that little bit special!
