Urban Metalworks design and make handcrafted wood & metal furniture in their workshop in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
Vanessa, Lee and his father Ian with Alice, 1933 Austin 7
“I started the business in 2013 nurturing my creativity and design flair with my love of woodwork. I wanted to create furniture designed to be both pleasing to the eye, long lasting and functional.”
Vanessa started the business alongside her husband Lee, who is the craftsman behind the metalwork. Lee has been at the helm of the family fabrication business which his father started over 40 years ago. Dad Ian is still very much involved and is at much at home doing the technical drawings for bespoke pieces as he is renovating 1930’s cars, his other passion.
“Our designs have a simple form allowing the materials to shine. The wonderful properties of the rich hardwoods we use, like Oak & Black Walnut along with the rawness of steel work in perfect harmony to give each unique piece a contemporary feel with an industrial edge. Our attention to detail and award winning customer service is at the heart of everything we do.”
“All of our furniture is lovingly made by hand using materials that have been carefully selected by us from local suppliers that we know and trust. The timber we use is from sustainable sources with certification from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC).
Our furniture pieces are built to last and we hope will be enjoyed by future generations to come. It is in our ethos to minimise waste and look after our environment. With this at the forefront of our minds, where possible, we try to utilise any remnants of wood and steel to make smaller craft items.”
